The customer

Founded in 2017, Fish Fixe delivers portioned sustainable seafood to homes across the country. Fish Fixe was founded by Melissa Harrington and Emily Castro, two college friends who came up with the idea after both realizing how difficult it was to add fresh seafood to their busy families’ ever-changing dinner schedules.

The problem

In November 2021, Melissa and Emily appeared on ABC’s reality TV show “Shark Tank,” seeking investment and drowning in a sea of shipping issues. Their costs on an average box were so high, the company was barely profitable. The major problem? Logistics.

Fish Fixe exploded in popularity during the pandemic, meaning the company’s customer mix grew from 75% local 1 day shipping to 50% East and West Coast – forcing Melissa and Emily to subsidize nationwide shipping.

Shipping was cannibalizing 11% of their revenue, something Mark Cuban called out as a big problem. Melissa and Emily were seeking a 3PL that would get them to everywhere in the U.S. within 1-2 days.

The solution

Founded by two former ButcherBox executives, Grip’s Smart Logistics Engine is designed to help perishable DTC brands like Fish Fixe reduce their costs and increase shipping performance.

Grip’s powerful dashboard leverages over 25 million data points and analyzes factors such as temperature, major weather events and carrier performance to provide package-by-package shipping recommendations. This level of insight was previously unavailable for most DTC brands, especially in the cold chain space.

Grip’s platform saves our partners up to 30% in shipping costs by recommending the correct packaging and shipping based on real-time conditions and the most cost effective carriers. Businesses also reduce spoilage rates by up to 25% after onboarding with Grip.

Since switching to Grip, Fish Fixe has been able to cut their shipping costs by more than 25% and send 48% of their orders nationwide within just one day. By using Grip’s dashboard, Fish Fixe’s team has also been able to unlock productivity, easily manage nationwide orders and reduce failure rates.

In a recent interview with CNBC, the founders shared that since putting the right systems and people in place, they’ve finally been able to get back in the kitchen to make more recipes for their customers and spend more time with their families.

Grip’s nationwide fulfillment network enables brands to reach 60% of the country in just 24 hours with facilities in New Jersey, Texas, Florida and California.
